Mexico’s ClaroVideo Ups Original Content Production (Exclusive)

Mexican OTT streaming service ClaroVideo, a subsidiary of Carlos Slim’s giant telco America Movil, is ramping up its original content production with the upcoming psychological thriller series “La Hermandad,” (“The Brotherhood”) along with its new comedy series, “El Torito,” set to launch online early November.

Mexican helmers Carlos Bolado (“Olvidados”) and Humberto Hinojosa (“I Hate Love”) are attached to direct the 14-episode “La Hermandad” with Colombian thesp-producer Manolo Cardona of 11:11 Films to play the lead and co-produce. Production begins in Mexico City on Oct. 26, per Cardona who was at the Festival Int’l de Cine Fine Arts in the Dominican Republic with co-stars Marlon Moreno and Maria Nela Sinisterra to promote 11:11 pic “Corazon de Leon,” the Colombian adaptation of the hit Argentine romcom.

In “La Hermandad,” Cardona plays a psychiatrist who plots to avenge a couple of murders that have profoundly impacted his life. Casting for the other roles is underway for the series, targeted to launch in the spring of next year.

“These original productions mark our keen interest to generate alternative quality content for Latin American audiences, and at the same time open new opportunities for the development of talent in our region,” said Andres Vazquez del Mercado, chief content officer of America Movil Contenidos.

Market leader Netflix kickstarted the trend with Gaz Alazraki’s Mexican family dramedy series “Club de Cuervos” and Colombian-set drama series “Narcos,” as well as the upcoming Brazilian futuristic drama series “3%” from Boutique Films and “City of God” cinematographer Cesar Charlone.

The upsurge of original content production among the OTT services is “definitely good news for the entertainment industry in Latin America,” said Cardona, who also stars in “Narcos.”

Netflix enjoys a 57.5% share of Latin America’s 8.8 million active OTT subscription video accounts, per Dataxis. ClaroVideo, with over a million subs, is the second largest OTT service in the region with an estimated 40% market share, up from 32%. ClaroVideo re-launched its OTT service after Netflix entered the Latin American market in 2011.

Meanwhile, 11:11 Films is producing bioseries “Pambele,” about Colombia’s first boxing champ Antonio Cervantes aka Kid Pambele, for Colombian TV network RCN. Scribes Raul Prieto and Rosa Clemente, partners at 11:11, have penned both “Pambele” and “La Hermandad.” Sergio Osorio and Juancho Cardona helm “Pambele.”

11:11 Films is also setting up a fund for its film and TV productions, and is planning to open offices in the Dominican Republic in order to complement its current bases in Colombia and Mexico, and tap the Caribbean country’s tax credits of up to 25% on eligible above- and below-the-line expenditure.
